What do shall we make of this gesture by Pakistan?

The Pakistan Government has thrown an invite to the Indian Hindus to join the first "puja" (prayers) after 60 years since partition on February 16 on the occasion of the Maha Sivaratri in the renovated main Siva Temple in the famous Katasraj Temple Complex, 2 hours drive from Lahore. The foundation stone for the renovation was laid in June 2005 by Bhartiya Janata Party leader Lal Krishna Advani during his Pakistan visit The Indian givernment has for years subsidised the flights of Muslims on pilgrimage to Mecca. This right to a subsidy has been enshrined in law in India. Thus this little gesture of Pakistan to allow Indian Hindus a chance to visit Hindu temples in Pakistan can be viewed as very generous indeed. Is Pakistan attempting to make up for the fact that the USA has at last admitted that Pakistan is the real home of many terroist organisations including the Al Qaida? www.indiadaily.com Glad to read some positive answers. Except 'akband' might like to note that the mojority of answers cautiously welcome the Pakistani move. No matter how much the Pakistan Government tries there are those that are hellbent on destroying any efforts. The last sentence in 'akband's' reply proves this. The Pakistan Government will never succeed without the support of it's people. This will then prove to be just another Political gesture. Shame. 'Snout' is totally correct about 'nuclear brinkmanship'. Just consider any threat to Pakistan -- none without provocation from Pakistan. India on the other hand has been pre-emptively attacked by China. Pakistan has never had a democratically elected government, for any reasonable lenght of time, in it's history. Why? India in contrast is the largest democracy in the world. Terrorist, with the backing of Pakistan Government, have attacked the Indian Parliament Buildings with the death of 14 people. Perhaps 'akband' might like to answer these points, keeping anger under control.

1. I think that any understanding over there is a good thing.
2. Central Asia and the Middle East is one huge melting pot for violence and terrorism, and the rest of the world is aware of this. There must come a time that political boundaries get relaxed or are removed altogether (communism, Berlin Wall etc), I think that this is a classic case of extending some sort of olive branch and trying to make right their wrongdoings.
3. It's a start - a measure of respect and decency that should be applauded and encouraged. I don't think claiming ulterior motives is helpful to the process. To me as an Australian, the continuing enmity between Indians and Pakistanis is bizarre, insane, dangerous and incomprehensible. A bit more energy into a decent cricket competition, and a bit less into nuclear brinkmanship enhances the kudos of both countries with the rest of the world.

On one hand you describe the gesture as generous and on the other hand you doubt Pakistan's sincerity, come on Pakistan can live with all the accusations the world makes and when there is a problem USA is the first on to acknowledge that Pakistan is a front line allay on the war on terrorism. Lastly i hope people like you do not come to Pakistan

7. Although the present leader of Pakistan is a military dictator he has made some positive changes recently. Perhaps he is doing it for the reason you mention but let's hope some good will come out of this.
